Led by Christ, and transformed by His love and grace, the people of Shepherd of the Cross believe that we are sent forth from this community to offer compassionate service to others in the name of Christ.  Our aim in outreach is to help build relationships, walking side-by-side with those around us.  For the season of Lent, we'll designate our midweek offering to local charities, and collect items for Lutheran World Relief Personal Care kits.

Throughout the year, some areas of outreach that we have pursued are:

Food Pantry Collection

Each month, the community is encouraged to bring different food/toiletry items to worship to help support the current needs of the food pantry.  Shepherd of the Cross has consistently donated to the food pantry, and in cooperation with the handcrafted items made by Products of the Flock, money is donated annually to help fund turkeys and hams for families at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

5 Loaves 2 Fishes

About two times a year, a group helps prepare and serve a meal at 5 Loaves 2 Fishes, located in the MCSA building in downtown Muscatine.

Ye Ol’ Country Store: New Era Bake Sale

Each October, Shepherd of the Cross partners with New Era Lutheran Church (in rural Muscatine) to provide baked goods for their Ye Ol’ Country Store.  Proceeds from the bake sale have historically totaled over $1000 and are donated to local causes.

Trunk or Treat

In the fall of 2016, the Education Board invited the area ELCA congregations to partner together in Trunk or Treat.  Rather than trick-or-treating door to door, this event allows kids and their families to “trunk”-or-treat safely to open trunks.  This past year, several people got creative and decorated their trunks surrounding themes like: a candy shop, a haunted Hogwarts library and the Cookie Monster.  This event is intended to be a outreach event to the broader community.

Harvest Festival

In the beginning of November, Shepherd hosts a Harvest Festival, featuring soup, bread and pie.  Traditionally, the first $1000 collected is donated to Lutheran Chaplaincy Outreach (LCO) – an ministry of the Southeastern Iowa Synod.  Many in the community look forward to this event each year!

Summer Mission Trips

Each summer, a group of adults spends a week in service in different areas around the country. Primarily working through Lutheran Disaster Response, the last group travelled to Colorado.  In addition, every three years, children, youth and families are encouraged to participate in a YouthWorks! mission trip.  This mission trip is intended to be intergenerational, and combines service work with a nightly gathering of worship, prayer and faith formation.

Products of the Flock

In addition, we have Products of the Flock. These are handcrafted items (made entirely of donated materials) that are sold at the church and at various places in Muscatine. All profits and proceeds are used to help those in need.
