sotc004How We Got Our Start

Shepherd of the Cross has grown today to embrace God’s call to the greater Muscatine area. Not only do people from Muscatine come to gather with us, but people from Wilton, Durant, Moscow and other surrounding areas also join us. Our humble beginnings in the community go back about 30 years.

In 1986, the first pastor – Pastor Arno Frerichs – literally knocked on thousands of doors to invite to hear the Gospel message in a new way. By September 1987, the people gathered to sign a charter and officially became a congregation.  For the first years, the congregation gathered for worship in the former Muscatine Holiday Inn.

Not too long after the congregation began meeting regularly, the decision was made to purchase land and build.  The current building was completed in 1989, but not without significant help from those outside the community.  Fellow ELCA congregations pitched in what financial support they could offer, and the work of ELCA Mission Builders helped literally “raise the roof” on the building that many now call their church home.

By 1991, Wonder Years Preschool began operating out of Shepherd as an extension of its ministry to the greater community.  Today, Michelle Rogers (director) and Kathy Dunham (assistant) continue to teach 3 and 4-year-olds during morning classes.

Pastor Arno Frerichs, Shepherd’s founding pastor, resigned in 1988.  The congregation entered into the call process, and for the next two decades, several pastors continued to lead this congregation forward in mission.
