A Celebration of Faith

Confirmation of Elyse Eichelberger

On Sunday Elyse Eichelberger shared her faith statement with the congregation as a part of her confirmation/affirmation of baptism. We rejoice with Elyse as she takes this step on her faith journey, and we continue to walk along side her as fellow followers of Jesus living out our faith!

Blessing of Backpacks and Distribution of Bibles

We’re sending our kids, and adults, back into the school year routine with a blessing! Bring your school backpack (or your work bag) to worship on Sunday, August 27 and we’ll have a special blessing during the kid’s sermon. Iowa Bishop’s RAGBRAI Ride for Hunger Update

The Bishops’ RAGBRAI Team completed an awesome week biking across the state. Supported by the hospitality and generosity of SOTC and New Era, along with congregations across the state, the current team total is $63,273.

The three synods will continue adding to the total until September 1, so it’s not too late to join the cause! Be on the lookout for highlights of 50 ministries fighting hunger across Iowa along with photos and videos from the ride in the coming weeks.

Are you a Thrivent Member?

As we look to the Family Faith Night year, we are aiming to secure funding so that meals are either free, or at low cost, to our families. To make that happen, we are hoping to rely on Thrivent grants through action teams.

If you are a Thrivent member and have grants remaining for the year, contact Stacey Ramos (Zion) via email or cell phone (563-571-0363) for more specific instructions. She can help you through the process. Thank you in advance!

Elementary Teachers Needed

With Family Faith Nights approaching soon we are looking for teachers to help guide our kiddos. We will need two adults each night. Click here to sign up for the dates that work best for you.

Even if you are signed up or interested in being a part of the Big Questions adult group, we encourage you to consider serving our kids on a periodic basis. Questions? Contact Pastor Aleese.

Lutheran Disaster Response to Maui Fires

The significant loss of life and damage caused by the wildfires in Hawaii have turned our prayers and attention to mourning those lost, supporting the survivors and how Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) can assist with recovery.

If you’re looking for a way to offer support, consider giving through LDR. LDR is coordinating with the Pacifica Synod and other partners to assess the needs of people impacted by the wildfires. We will work with them to provide for immediate needs and long-term recovery amid the widespread destruction.

Big Questions Adult Course

Beginning September 2023

Have you ever had questions about faith, but haven’t felt comfortable voicing them? Or, have you ever felt as though there wasn’t a place in the church to ask your questions?

Big Questions is a group that will explore common, yet complex, questions of faith and life. Examples of questions we’ll consider are: Why do bad things happen? What happens when I die? What is truth and how do I know what is true? As we continue throughout the year, questions addressed in our sessions will be determined by the questions of participants.

To honor the complexity of the questions named, Big Questions will not offer simple, pat-answers. Rather, through instruction, conversation, Scripture, and formative spiritual practices, the intent of Big Questions will be to explore the truths that shape our questions and the beliefs we carry, while also leading each of us to a faith that is more solid and richly personal.

Want to learn more about this group? Click here to get a fuller picture. Ready to sign up as a participant? Sign up online or in the narthex.

Worship: Living in Hope

Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43; Romans 8:12-25 |Good and bad. Right and wrong. In much of society, we’ve been trained to judge between one thing and the next. But, the truth is, it’s not always that simple. Life often doesn’t exist in black and white, but somewhere in the gray. So then, how are we to live as people of faith, here and now? If you’re seeking to explore challenging questions of life and faith, join us as we wrestle with the parable of the wheat and the weeds, as we claim the hope that God will restore all that exists, and as we are sent forth to live as if this hope means something for us and for the world.

After hosting New Era in June, we’re looking forward to joining them in their church…and looking forward to hearing a joint choir!

Our offering will once again support the Iowa Bishop’s RAGBRAI for Hunger Initiative. Our three Iowa Bishops are riding the 50th annual RAGBRAI to raise $50,000 to fight hunger and are highlighting 50 anti-hunger ministries along the way. Funds raised throughout the synod will support ELCA World Hunger along with synodical hunger initiatives.

If you desire to give an offering just to SOTC, you may do so outside of worship. Anything offered during worship (cash, check, and electronic giving) will be given toward the Iowa Bishop’s RAGBRAI for Hunger. If you regularly give through Tithe.ly or another electronic giving platform, your contribution will be directed toward SOTC.

Blog: Savoring the Word

For my birthday, I had the treat of enjoying homemade pistachio ice cream. It had just the right pistachio flavor, and it was oh so creamy.

Now, when that delightful bowl of goodness was put in front of me, I could’ve scarfed it down. It was so good that I was tempted to! But, I took my time. With little scoops on my spoon, I savored every last ounce of that ice cream.

As I ate that ice cream, it reminded me of the time that we take during worship as we hear God’s Word. Much like I could’ve scarfed down my ice cream, we could bulldoze right from one reading into the next. But to do so wouldn’t allow time to savor what we just heard from God’s Word, and it wouldn’t allow time for us to “chew on” and “digest” the goodness of God’s promises.

So next time you’re in worship, and next time that you crack open your Bible, allow a little time to savor, chew on, and digest the goodness of God’s promises. If pistachio ice cream is worth taking extra time to enjoy, God’s Word is definitely worth taking just a bit extra time.

Blessing and Godspeed to Bakke’s

This past Sunday we planted a tree in honor of Dave and Amy Bakke. The tree is a reminder of the roots that Dave and Amy planted at Shepherd, and a reminder that we remain connected through Christ. As the Bakke’s move to Rockford, we pray that they will continue to be rooted and grounded in Christ, and will continue to grow and bear fruit as fellow disciples of Christ!

Serving Families through Products of the Flock

In the past two weeks, proceeds from Products of the Flock have been used to assist two families who’ve contact SOTC for assistance.

One individual and her daughter, who has suffered domestic violence and has sought shelter at our local Domestic Violence Shelter, was seeking funds to obtain a copy of her social security card and birth certificate. These documents will allow her to obtain her own housing unit.

Another family suffered the loss of their home due to fire. For several months they have lived in their truck or in various homeless shelters. Because of the ages of their children, it has been difficult for the entire family to remain together in shelters. The family has been working with a case worker to secure more permanent housing, but was seeking immediate assistance for food and a place to land so they could think to the future. Since working with the family last week, they now have a strong lead of a mobile home they can rent while the husband continues to work.

We share these stories with you as a thank you for your support of Products of the Flock and the items they sell. After working with these families, in addition to others requests earlier this spring, funds in the Products of the Flock account are dwindling. If you’d like to add to this fund, consider purchasing any of the items in the narthex, or offering a donation to Products of the Flock.
