Sock and Laundry Drive

February 26 – April 2

Throughout Lent we are supporting Laundry Love, a ministry sponsored by Midtown Laundry Mat and Trinity Episcopal. Right now, they are looking for cash donations to fund the cost of laundry services and donations of the following items:

  • Socks (kids and adult)
  • Laundry detergent
  • Dryer sheets
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste

Donations of the above items can be brought to church and placed in the blue tote in the narthex. Cash donations can be put in the plastic tub in the narthex. Watch our contributions accumulate this season! Checks can be written out to Shepherd of the Cross with “Laundry Drive” in the memo line. Deposit checks in the offering plate or mail to the church. Our kids will be contributing $200 from their children’s sermon fund. Can we match the offering of our kids?

Midweek Lenten Gatherings Continue!

Wednesday, March 8 @ 6:30

We had a great crew gather last Wednesday as fellow pilgrims on our seeking journey! Be sure to join us tomorrow evening as we revisit the story of Nicodemus. Upon arriving, gather in the narthex. Kids are invited, too!

Easter Flowers and Easter Egg Candy

We need your help preparing for Easter!

1. Sponsor an Easter flower – Would you be willing to offset the cost of flowers by purchasing a plant in memory or honor of a loved one? If so, sign up in the narthex or contact the main office.

2. Donate Easter Egg candy – On Easter morning, we will host an Easter Breakfast (starting at 7:30am) and will have an egg hunt for kids at about 8:20 am. We’ll be collecting egg candy beginning Sunday, March 5. Help stuff the eggs on Palm Sunday – April 2 – during fellowship!

Christians Underground Update for Lent

Given that our Midweek Lenten Gatherings are conversational in style, and given that many who participate in Christians Underground are also participating in our evening opportunities, Christians Underground will be on hiatus through Lent. Stay tuned for when we will resume later in March!

Lutheran Disaster Relief Support for Earthquake Victims

Financial Update from Council

This past Sunday, Melissa Booth and Matt Bentz shared a message with the congregation on behalf of Council concerning our financial position. If you missed hearing their message, listen in to an update recorded by Delene McConnaha and Melissa Booth here. Questions and comments can be directed to your Council leaders: Delene McConnaha, Kim Bartling, Erin Jorgensen, Matt Bentz, Mackenzie Gilbert, Mark Petersen, Melissa Booth

Welcome to Our Flock, Josie Mae!

This past Sunday we had the privilege of welcoming Josie into our community through the sacrament of baptism! Josie, you are a beloved child of God, marked with the cross of Christ and sealed by the Holy Spirit! Welcome to the mission we all share as disciples of Jesus!

Faith Formation in our Kids and Families!

In the past week we’ve hosted various opportunities for our children, youth, and families to learn more about the Bible, about the sacraments, and about their faith!

Last Wednesday our middle school group that meets during Family Faith Night learned about the book of Exodus. Below you see two of our middle schoolers: one holding their interpretation of the ark of the covenant, and one working on their rendition of the 10 Commandments.

Then, on Sunday evening, we had 5 families join Pastor Aleese to learn about the sacraments, and specifically the promise of baptism. Below you see two of our leaders leading a science experiment to point to the promise that God forgives our sin. Even our adults had a bit of time for conversation themselves during the evening, diving deeper into questions about what baptism is really all about.

Keep your eyes open for more GOLF opportunities and Lenten formational groups coming your way soon!

Annual Meeting

Sunday, January 29 after worship

Each January we set aside a Sunday to celebrate our shared ministry together at SOTC during our annual meeting. During this time, we will review the year, vote on nominated leaders and proposed constitutional amendments, and also hear reports regarding our financial position. All are welcome to join us as we give thanks for the ways God has been at work in and through our Shepherds in the past year!

Family Faith Nights and Christians Underground Resume

Wednesday, January 4

Reminder to those involved in Family Faith Nights that we resume tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm at Grace with a meal. Christians Underground also resumes at Geo Johnz at noon.

Thanks for your support of ELCA Good Gifts!

Thanks to your help, and our Children’s Sermon offering fund, we were able to contribute $735 toward ELCA Good Gifts this Christmas! We purchased 3 goat and chicks, 1 share of a cow, 1 share of a fish farm, 5 pigs, 3 goats, 3 honeybee farms, 5 roosters, and 2 sets of chicks.

With your gifts you have helped families around the world move toward self-sustainability. For example, with the gift of a goat and a flock of chicks, families will have access to an ongoing supply of eggs from their chicken and protein-packed milk from their goat. Even better, extra eggs and dairy products can be sold at the market for a steady income.

Thanks for doing God’s Work with Your Hands!

Women’s Epiphany Party

Sunday, January 8, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Calling all women of the congregation!  Join us for our annual Women’s Epiphany Party in which we’ll share in a light meal (please bring an appetizer to share), a candle exchange (bring a wrapped candle for a rousing candle swap!), and a blessing for the coming year. This will take the place of Women’s Group on the second Saturday of the month.

January GOLF Night

Sunday, January 15 @ 4:00 pm

Mark your calendars to join us for our January Generations of Living Faith night! All in the congregation are invited to join us as we begin our monthly pattern again. More information to come soon about what we’ll be focusing on during our evening together.

Amendments to SOTC Constitution

This summer, the ELCA Churchwide Assembly passed a slate of suggested amendments to congregational constitutions. As our Council reviewed these suggestions, we also are suggesting an additional amendment regarding our Audit Committee. Suggested amendments are available in the narthex. We will vote upon the amendments during our annual meeting

If you received offering envelopes in 2022, a new set of envelopes will be ready for you by this coming Sunday, January 8. If you did not receive offering envelopes in 2022 but would like envelopes, contact Kathy.
