Worship: Hospitality-Givers and Recipients

Matthew 10:40-42 | Jesus’ disciples were sent out with a job to do: to proclaim the news of God’s Kingdom and to serve those they encountered. Much in the same way, as disciples of Jesus today, we are sent with a similar job description. But while the disciples were sent to give to others, they were also sent to receive from others. Join us this weekend as we explore the relationship between giving and receiving hospitality: opening our hands to receive the welcome and generosity of Christ and of our neighbors and intertwining ourselves with one another in wholehearted hospitality.

Worship: Throwing in the Towel or Taking Up the Mantle

Jeremiah 20:7-13, Matthew 10:24-39 | Summer is often a time for relaxation and vacation. It’s a time to recoup and take a break from daily responsibilities and tasks. In the same way, as disciples of Jesus, there may be seasons on our journey in which we seek a “break” from the commitments of discipleship, and from the commitments of living as a part of the community of the church. But in our Scripture readings this weekend, we receive a strong call reminding us that living as a follower of Jesus is a full-time job. So whether you feel as though you’re ready to pick up the mantle of Christ with zeal and energy, or whether you’re lookin’ for a break from living as a disciple in God’s Kingdom, join us worship as we hear Christ’s call for us: summoning us to lose our life so that we may find it.

Worship: The Call of Discipleship

Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26 | The saying goes, “There’s only so many hours in the day.” With varied commitments that we all carry, it can be challenging to attend to everything that needs our attention let alone think about living out our call as disciples of Jesus. And yet, God desires more than a portion of our lives. God calls us to follow with the whole of our being so that we might live in God’s promised fullness, and so that those around us – even the most unlikely of people – might be brought into the fold of God’s care. As a fellow seeker of Christ, join us as we wrestle with what discipleship means, and as we once again experience God’s hand outstretched to us – making us whole.

Worship: Who is God?

Genesis 1:1-2, 4a, Psalm 8 | Who is God? It’s a question that’s been asked for millennia, not only by people who profess Jesus as Savior, but by people of all backgrounds. So what do we, as Christians, have to say about who God is? Join us for worship as we explore the nature of the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – and as we are sent forth as bearing the name of the Triune God into the world.

Worship: Winds of the Spirit

John 20:19-23, Acts 2:1-21 | Did you know that it’s necessary for wind to blow over seedlings in a greenhouse? Without that wind, those seedlings don’t develop a proper root system and will be shocked when transplanted in an uncontrolled environment. In the same way, it’s necessary for the wind of the Spirit to blow over (and even into) us as followers of Jesus. From day to day, that wind might feel like a soft, gentle breeze one day, and the next day feel like a derecho. But always, always, that wind of the Spirit never stops moving and that wind of the Spirit is always blowing to give us life that we will grow and flourish wherever we find ourselves.

Worship: So that they may be one

John 17:1-11 | It’s not uncommon to hear the encouragement to work together with one another. Often, within communities, we hear messages of how we are “stronger together,” and for many of us we learned the importance of “sharing” back in preschool and kindergarten. But toward the end of Jesus’ last words to his disciples before his passion, Jesus gives a specific reason why he prays for his disciples to live as one. Join us for worship as we hear God’s Word, pointing us toward what it is we are to do as we await the coming of the Spirit.

Worship: Advocate

John 14:15-21 | When we think of someone being an “advocate” for us, we may think of someone who stands up for us, someone who steps in when we need it most, someone who speaks or acts on our behalf, or someone who is present with us as an encouragement or a comforter. These “advocates” often make quite the difference in our lives, sometimes in ways we can’t describe. And yet, in the Spirit, we are given an Advocate who goes beyond these actions. Join us this weekend for worship as we hear the promise of our Advocate who unites us with the very life of God, and as we receive the call to join our lives with our neighbors as living advocates.

Worship: Dwelling Places

John 14:1-14, 1 Peter 2:2-10 | When considering our journey of faith, some of us may be able to point to specific places or spaces where we sensed the presence of Christ. These experiences are important and are a gift. But even beyond these specific experiences, we are promised that to dwell with Jesus, we don’t need to be in a specific place. Rather, by Christ’s death and resurrection, and by the power of the Spirit, Jesus has created a space for us to dwell in God within our very selves. Join us for worship this weekend as we offer a blessing to our high school graduates, as we remember God’s promise to dwell with us wherever we find ourselves, and as we let ourselves be built into a dwelling place for the sake of others.

Worship: Voice of the Shepherd

John 10:1-10 | We “know” the voices of those close to us. At the same time, we caution our children not to listen to the voices of strangers. So then, how do we heed the voice of Jesus as our shepherd? Especially when that voice may still seem a bit foreign, or difficult to decipher? Join us for worship as together we practice listening for the voice of our Good Shepherd and as we are given the opportunity to trust and believe, leading us into abundant life.

Worship: Then Their Eyes Were Opened

Luke 24:13-35 | Have you ever been looking for something for hours, only to realize it was right in front of you all along? It’s mind-boggling how our perspective may be jaded by our expectations and how significant a fresh perspective may be. As we continue into the season of Easter, today we join with two of Christ’s disciples on the road who, initially, were kept from recognizing Jesus. But, by remaining on the journey and staying with Christ, eventually their eyes were opened, and they recognized their hearts were burning within them the entire time. Venturing forth onto our own journeys of faith, we invite you to join us as together we experience the presence of Christ through the Eucharist, and as open ourselves to the unexpected ways and places that Christ reveals himself to us.
